Lemongrass, or lemon grass is a type of grass native to Asia and used both as a culinary herb and to make a caffeine free herbal tea. Lemongrass widely used in Vietnamese, Malaysian, and Thai cuisine, and is also frequently used as an ingredient in herbal teas and other blends.

Is it important that it smell like lemons?

Although unrelated to lemons, lemongrass has a distinctive aroma of lemons, due to the fact that it shares a number of chemical constituents in its essential oil, including citral, citronellol, and geraniol. A number of other herbs, also unrelated, have similar lemony aromas because they share various concentrations of these same chemicals; these herbs include lemon balm, lemon verbena, and lemon myrtle. Fascinatingly, many of these “lemony” chemicals are responsible for the medicinal properties of these plants.

Health Benefits of Lemongrass:

A growing body of evidence points to antiviral and antifungal activity of lemongrass, as well as the potential to prevent or treat cancer. However, most of these properties have only been established only under the controlled conditions of in vitro (lab culture / test-tube / petri dish) experiments, and it is not clear the degree to which these benefits would actually be available to people drinking lemongrass tea.

  • Cancer treatment and prevention – There is some preliminary evidence that lemongrass could be used to prevent or treat cancer. Citral was found in lab experiments to activate the cell death program of cancer cells. Various anticarcinogenic and antimutagenic chemicals have been isolated and identified from lemongrass, and there is some evidence of cancer-preventing properties from studies on rats, but there is an absence of controlled human studies firmly establishing any effects in humans.
  • Analgesic (pain-relieving) properties – There is some evidence that lemongrass has analgesic properties, due to the presence of the chemical myrcene. This chemical is thought to act by a different mechanism from aspirin-like painkillers. These benefits have been shown in animal studies to be accessible through drinking lemongrass tea.
  • Antiviral properties – Lab experiments have shown that the essential oil of lemongrass has antiviral properties, both against plant viruses and human viruses, including Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1), the virus which causes cold sores.
  • Antifungal properties – In vitro studies found lemongrass to have antifungal activity, particularly against the Candida yeasts which often cause infections in humans.

Lemongrass has other uses in traditional medicine, but some of these other uses have not been validated by science. An older study failed to find any evidence of anxiety-reducing (anxiolytic) effects, even though lemongrass is used for this purpose in Brazil.

Other lemony herbs share a number of active ingredients with lemongrass. It is likely that the health and medicinal properties of lemongrass overlap with these other plants to some degree.

Is exercise promoted?

You should incorporate a minimum of 20 minutes of exercise you enjoy at least three days every week. The diet offers guidelines on how to incorporate exercise into your daily life and tips on keeping you moving. It also suggests “ten commandments” of exercise, including drinking plenty of water before, during, and after exercising, exercising at your own pace and fitness level, and keeping a daily written record of your progress.

Are supplements recommended?

Traditional Food in Colombia – Know Some Facts cuisines

Colombia has a privileged location in South America, with part of its coast to the cool Pacific Ocean and part in the Caribbean with its warmer waters. Part of the country has mountains, other part has valleys. Therefore they can grow all kinds of fruits, vegetables and have all kinds of seafood. 

Through its history, Colombia has received influence of the Peruvian and Brazilian cuisine’s tradition, but also from the Japanese and Arabic way of cooking. To this add their own cultural heritage, as the Amerindians also raised different species of animals, with which they could make delicious dishes. And to this variety we also must add the Spanish tradition.

We could say that the Colombian cuisine uses different meats, fishes, plenty of vegetables and lots and lots of exotic and delicious fruits.   Also their delicacies depend on the regions, as food is different in the mountain regions than what is on the coastal regions. Its food is always, anyway, very tasty, with natural flavors, and not too spicy. Colombians also love soups, which are practically a must in each dinner or lunch. But the most important fact is that they love their food done with fresh ingredients, and fresh fruits.

In Colombia people have usually three meals a day. First one, breakfast, before to going to work. The most important meal is lunch. It is a meal consisting of three courses, soup, main dish and a drink, and dessert or fruit. Dinner is very light, taken around 9:30 PM. 

What is more fascinating about Colombia is that all changes according to the region where one is. If in the jungle, or in the coast, or in the valley, people have their own way of dressing, have their different food preferences, their favorite drinks. And this is what makes it such a rich country and so very interesting.

But in all these regions there are some things in common too. They take it very seriously what their food is, the recipes they use and the different techniques are they same as centuries ago, giving them a sense of nationalism, reinforcing the feeling of being all from the same country. Their typical meals are full of tradition and history and they won’t change that.

If we were to name some of the traditional dishes or food of Colombia, we could choose the arepa, the sancocho, the fritanga. Also lots of chicken, beef, fish corn, onions tomatoes, potatoes, rice and several different legumes.

To all this we should add a wonderful cup of coffee, the best in the world!

1960 Dining Trends in America cuisines

Throughout American history, our cuisine was shaped in part by cultural and world events, along with new technologies. From turn of the century Victorian and opulent cuisine, then into the prohibition and speakeasy cuisine of the 1920s, there have been dramatic shifts in what as a people we ate. Around the time of 1960, dining was a colorful and involved affair that still pops up today at retro parties.

Insofar as national events, there was a cultural rift among the people, while in the international arena, the food rationing of WWII was a thing of the past. In the world of dining, the popular casseroles of the 1950s were passe, and big names like Julia Child and Jacqueline Kennedy introduced elaborate, French-inspired dishes. We also saw the rise of vegetarian and ethnic food movements. On the other side of things, junk food and fast food made their presence known in the world of 1960 dining.

Fine Dining and French Cuisine

In the time of 1960 dining, homemakers began playing with more elaborate, rich dishes such as Swedish meatballs and beef Wellington. At the same time French cuisine became highly popularized largely as a result of Julia Child. The television show of America’s best known chef first aired in 1963, when viewers were mesmerized by her displays of such new dishes as omelets and French onion soup.


Up until the time around 1960, dining did not include a vegetarian option. The new healthy movement that developed was greatly helped by the efforts of the American entrepreneur, Frieda Caplan, who first introduced much exotic produce to the American market. These include shitake mushrooms, mangoes and most famously, the kiwi, common items today, but virtually unknown at the time.

Ethnic Food

Around this time, ethnic cuisine also began to pique American interest. Japanese steakhouses were first introduced around this time, with their theatrics and hibachi style grills. Benihana, a popular Japanese steakhouse that’s still around today, was first opened in 1964. Soul food also was popular at this time, and went along with the widespread soul music of the era. This cuisine originated in the deep South and characterized much of African American cooking. Largely similar to comfort food, soul food dishes included the likes of hush puppies, fried chicken, country fried steak, collard greens and rice pudding.

Junk Food

This is also the time when junk food, like it or not, came into the picture. It was originally aimed at the baby boomers and offered up nutritionally void treats like buffalo wings and fudge cakes. For example, Tang, that sugary powdered orange drink intended for use by the astronauts, was invented during this time.


Another term, “suburban devotion” came to characterize 1960 dining as well. This renewed interest in the home and outdoor entertaining took the form of mixers and barbecues. Theme parties, like Hawaiian luaus, were popular.

Fondue and Flaming Food

Another way Americans spiced up their 1960 dining experience was the introduction of cheese and chocolate fondue, along with flaming foods. Fondue was originally a Swiss innovation, but it quickly became an entrenched part of American culture, as did flaming foods. One dish, steak Diane, was usually cooked tableside, while baked Alaska was a flaming meringue dessert popular at dinner parties. Both dishes lent an air of theatrics to dinnertime.

Chain Restaurants

Now seen everywhere, chain restaurants started popping up en masse in the 1960s, when families started spending their evenings at places like Howard Johnson. Salad bars were also born, while the first Wendy’s was created in 1969.

As a Flight Attendant with an erratic schedule I am always conscious about keeping healthy. The new cry out there by the general public is the use of body scanners that emit radiation doses. What people really don’t know is the health risk that flying itself gives. Flying gives you more radiation exposure than the body scanners ever will. Two minutes flying at 30,000 feet will give you as much radiation as a body scan! And by the time you are at a normal cruising altitude of 39,000 feet the total radiation is much greater than what it is at sea level. Flying in the upper thinner portion of the atmosphere increases your radiation exposure and doubles with every 6,000 feet of altitude!

For people who don’t fly that much I don’t think this is a concern and remember you can always opt out of the body scanner which is your right. But this can put you at the mercy of a full body pat down, which can be a very unpleasant experience. But for Frequent Flyers and Flight Crews who fly commercial airlines at high altitudes, we are subjected to higher than normal radiation levels from the sun and cosmic rays. And in the event of a solar flare radiation is even worse. This raises a real health risk because we are exposed to more radiation than any other occupation out there!

It is amazing to me why our employers do not educate us about this risk. European carriers make it mandatory that Flight Crews be educated about cosmic radiation. And also I wonder why we are not monitored as most health professionals who frequently deliver x-rays and cancer treatments. It only takes about six or seven trips from New York to Narita Japan to exceed the general public limits. That is more than any health professional gets that delivers x-rays!

Everyone is exposed to some radiation every day. Cosmic radiation which comes from the sun is a form of Ionizing radiation; charged particles that go through our bodies all the time which unbalance us. But we are protected by most of them because the earth’s atmosphere absorbs much of this and deflects them before they reach us. So the higher you are the less atmosphere to protect you. And too much exposure can lead to tissue and genetic damage that cause cancer and other diseases.

We are all aware that the sun’s ultraviolet radiation can damage skin cells which may lead to skin cancers, but at a high energy it becomes ionizing radiation which can lead to chemical reactions inside cells and break DNA chains which mutate the cells and become cancerous. If it occurs in a sperm or egg it can result in birth defects which is why pregnant women should never be subjected to x-rays.

There is a tremendous amount of evidence that female flight attendants have higher rates of breast cancer then the rest of the population. We also must take into consideration that our life style of constantly crossing time zones can throw off our hormones, messes with our serotonin and dopamine which can also play a big part in causing cancer.

Luckily for most flight personnel, we don’t have to go through the body scanners because who wants that additional dose of radiation… But our Frequent Flyers are not so lucky. Although the machines they say are a very low level and not like an X-ray at all, experts claim the machines are not harmful. I believe it’s still too early to tell.

But although we are not going through the body scanners we are still at a higher risk. Robert Barish who is a physicist and author of “The Invisible Passenger: Radiation Risks For People Who Fly” says crewmembers are exposing themselves to more radiation than almost any other occupation out there.

So how much flying is too much?

There are two organizations “The U.S. National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements” and the “International Commission on Radiological Protection”. They both have established the radiation tolerance for air crews and the general public. A week’s worth of natural background radiation is about 2.4 mSv a year. The group goes on to say that one single long international flight will expose you to a weeks’ worth of natural background radiation. But airline employees definitely exceed the groups recommend limits.

What can we do? Well airline personnel certainly cannot quit or stop flying, first it’s just what they do, its their job and second its the way the general public gets around. But the price to pay could be our health. So how can we protect our health?

Since I obviously travel regularly here is what I do to keep my health while flying and being exposed to radiation. Remember the highest mountain in the world is 28,000 feet yet most of us think nothing of spending hours at 35,000 feet, an altitude that we humans were never designed to be exposed to. And in addition to radiation exposure while flying, radiation and radioactivity are everywhere, in the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat. Our toxic overload just keeps getting greater.

Cleansing – We can bind radioactive particles and flush them out of our bodies. If not they will stay there and slowly work at destroying your health. We will succumb to unexplained symptoms of fatigue, weekend immune system and all sorts of conditions and diseases. Cleansing has been around for centuries. Being immobile on a plane increases the risk that blood clots will develop and then lodge in the lungs (pulmonary embolism). To reduce this risk, avoid alcohol, wear loose clothing and avoid crossing your legs. Of course we cannot have 230 people walking around the aircraft but for a certain few this is a necessity. It’s better than an medical emergency on the airplane.

Eat Well and Avoid Junk Food – Unfortunately most of your options at hotels and airports are junk or processed foods. My advice is to avoid these altogether. This goes for the in flight meals that are nothing more than processed foods! Junk food is loaded with salt, sugar and will impair your immune system. The truth is that fasting is much better than eating junk food. Fasting does less to impair your body’s immune system. Pack your carry on with healthy snacks, choose organic raw almonds, healthy bars or protein shakes! Easy to do on the airplane and you will feel so much better. Choose carefully and make sure your snacks are organically based and not full of sugar.
